Love Google Forms

I have used Google Docs for awhile now collaborating on projects and creating new presentations but one application I don't feel I have utilized nearly enough is the Google Forms option. Lately I have been playing around with it by making online quizzes, surveys, library request forms and even trying out doing book reviews with students using this app.

So far I have gotten quite a few material requests using the form, so I'm trying to incorporate more forms into our classrooms. A few teachers have tried out using them for online worksheets and like most of the features. One complaint that I have heard is that its hard to make a large word bank for matching type questions. Below I have posted a couple of my Google Forms :)

Google Applications

Google has so many tools available it gets hard to keep track. Almost everyday I find something new to use on the site and then it's hard to really know what each tool is capable of, especially in the classroom. Richard Byrne posted a great guide to Google and the apps that can be used in the classroom. Below is his guide:

What is a Library Media Specialist?

This is a frequently asked question and there are many answers. I feel like I could have several different job descriptions all at one time. In several blogs in my PLN have posted a handout titled, What should an administrator expect a School Library Media Specialist to be? by Carl A. Harvey II it really gives a look at many of the different "hats" we wear.

Online Bookmarks

I was first introduced to online bookmarking in one of my graduate classes while working towards my MLIS degree. The professor had the class using Delicious, and that is what I've used ever since. Throughout the last year I have found new bookmarking websites but never tried any of them out until recently. After testing out Diigo, I have decided to completely switch all of my bookmarks over to it. Diigo has more options for saving links, creating folders, sharing with friends and even the option to keep some of the websites private. I use bookmarking sites almost daily when finding new resources online and it helps me to stay organized. I don't think I'll ever go back to the old one again! I still need to check out some of the these sites but here are a few other ideas for bookmarking websites:

Here is the link to my Diigo Library =)

Birthday English Projects

Last week one of our English teachers came to me with a problem she was having with finding materials for a new project her Creative Writing class was working on. The class was doing research on what was happening in the world on the day they were born, and she was having some problems finding some good resources.

I had a great time finding some good websites for the class to use, including some newspaper archives but also some online magazines. Below are all the websites that I found online to help the kids, some have a great selection of archived materials available for free online. The resources were also added to the pathfinder section on the virtual library :)

Audio Books

There are some great places available online for free and easy to use audiobooks. Many of our teachers use the audio to help students follow along as well as help them to understand some of the language being used in some of the classics they are reading, audio books are also helpful for those lower level readers that you may have in your classes. These can be a great way for them to help improve their reading skills by reading along with the audio. In the media center there are only a few of the required reading audio books so many of the teachers are always looking for different titles. I have found quite a few good websites to use for these teachers to find books like Huckleberry Finn, Romeo and Juliet, and other classics, but you can also find quite a few for fun reading materials as well. Most of these websites will download the book onto your iTunes or you can just play it chapter by chapter in your web browser.

Here are just a few:
